Tuesday, May 8 NEW YORK – Mike Tyson's fight against David Izon in Washington, D.C., is on hold. That's the way the situation was described Tuesday by Marina Capurro, a Showtime vice president. She said the fight definitely would not be held June 2, and a new date has not been set. The dates of June 16 and June 30, however, have been discussed. Tyson and Showtime are trying to arrange for Tyson's next fight to be a challenge to Hasim Rahman, who won the WBC-IBF titles by knocking out Lennox Lewis in the fifth round April 21 at South Africa. Lewis and HBO are trying to enforce an immediate rematch, and Lewis has said it would happen in September. There was a rematch clause in their contracts. Tyson has filed a suit against the WBC in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to force the organization to uphold what he said is its rule against immediate rematches. Shelly Finkel, Tyson's adviser, has said Rahman inherited the WBC mandatory title defense when he won. Tyson is ranked No. 1 by the WBC. He also has said there is a 150-day window for a rematch in the Rahman-Lewis contract. Tyson has a contract with Showtime, while Lewis has one with HBO. Rahman is tied to neither network. |
